Facing unfavourable ground from day one, ExCo built a gravel raft foundation and held every tolerance to the standard required, right through to sign-off.

Project overview

Cohesive Construction engaged ExCo for a full-service package on this commercial project — earthworks, kerb and channel, and hard landscaping.

The challenge

Ground conditions on site weren't favourable, which meant a gravel raft was needed from the outset. Target soil dips had to be hit and verified through geotech testing, working alongside the project's geotech engineers to confirm the standard was met before work proceeded.

How ExCo approached it

ExCo got straight into the gravel raft solution with no delays to the programme, and worked in closely with Cohesive Construction's other trades throughout. The two teams built the project schedule together up front, which kept the front end of the job aligned and everyone moving toward the same deadlines. Precision mattered throughout — asphalt and foundation prep held to millimetre tolerances — and the standard didn't move until it was right. The team was approachable and easy to reach throughout, which kept communication straightforward on Cohesive's side.
